When most people think of dental implants, they think of the metal posts that are placed in the jawbone to hold replacement teeth. However, dental implants are much more than just these posts. Dental implants are a complete system designed to offer patients with replacement teeth that appear, feel, and perform just like natural teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Before we get into the specifics of dental implants, let's take a step back and talk about why you might want to consider them in the first place. After all, there are other options for tooth replacement, such as dentures and bridges. So, what are the benefits of choosing dental implants?

The primary benefit of dental implants is that they allow you to keep your natural smile. Unlike dentures and bridges, which can slip and cause you embarrassment, dental implants are secure and will not move around in your mouth. This means you can eat and speak with confidence knowing that your teeth will stay in place.

In addition to providing you with a natural-looking smile, dental implants also offer superior comfort because they fuse to your jawbone. This eliminates any discomfort caused by rubbing or irritation from traditional dentures or bridges.

Finally, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.

Now that we've talked about some of the benefits of dental implants, let's get into the specifics of implant surgery.

Dental Implant Surgery

Implant surgery is a complex procedure that requires a high level of skill and experience on the part of the surgeon. The first step in implant surgery is to place titanium posts into your jawbone where your missing teeth used to be. These posts act as anchors for your new replacement teeth. Once the posts have been placed in your jawbone, it will take several months for them to fuse (or integrate) with the bone tissue before moving on to the next step in the process.

Once your jawbone has had enough time to heal and fuse with the titanium posts, we will then attach abutments (or connectors) to the posts. These abutments will protrude from your gums slightly and act as attaching points for your new replacement teeth. In some cases, your new replacement teeth can be placed on the same day as your abutments; however, in other cases, you may need to wait for several weeks for your replacement teeth to be made before they can be placed. Either way, once everything is in place, you'll have a brand new smile that looks and feels just like natural teeth!
