Adult Braces Mean It’s Never too Late to Straighten Your Smile

Straight, even teeth have a lot of benefits, and they’re more than just cosmetic. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and therefore less associated with decay – this is a tremendous advantage for our Flowery Branch dentist patients who do happen to have straight teeth.

But if you’re an adult who needed braces, but didn’t get them for one reason or another as a young person, there’s an option available to you to straighten your smile without a mouthful of metal or taking a tremendous time commitment: Six Month Smiles. If you are 16 or older and have crooked or slightly gapped teeth, this option may be for you.

How Do Six Month Smiles Straighten My Teeth?

Six Month Smiles is an adult braces option we offer at Royal Lakes Dentistry. They are clear braces designed to blend seamlessly with your teeth for straightening. While they aren’t completely invisible to others, they aren’t as highly visible to traditional metal braces. Once applied, you will return regularly to our office for adjustments or tightening of the braces as your teeth shift into place.

When applied to the teeth, these adult braces exert forces on the teeth to direct them into a more aligned place. Typically, this is accomplished in about six months, which is one-fourth of the minimum time most young people wear braces. Many of our Flowery Branch dentist patients ask how some people have to wear braces for years, yet adult braces require only six months. The answer is their purpose: typically as a teenager, metal braces are intended to not only straighten a person’s smile, but also to improve a person’s jaw alignment. Six Month Smiles are intended to enhance the cosmetic appearance of your teeth, not necessarily to correct an improper bite alignment.

Note that after you wear Six Month Smiles, you will need to wear a removable retainer, typically in the evenings, to keep your results up. While some adults may find this an inconvenience, wearing a retainer is an aspect of every tooth-straightening approach. Plus, once you’ve obtained the straight, even teeth you’ve always desired, wearing a retainer for a few hours each night can seem like a small commitment to a beautiful smile.
