Whether you’re planning to take a road trip or fly to your destination, chances are that your family vacation will be a lot of fun. You’ll get to spend time together, enjoy some fun excursions and learn a little more about your family members. There’s just one problem: vacations can be expensive. This is why it’s important to start saving long before you take your actual trip. Figuring out ways to save money when you have kids can be tough and saving with a deadline in mind can be even tougher. Fortunately, there are many ways you can start to save money for your family vacation. Here’s how.

Start early

As soon as you begin to plan a family vacation, start saving money. Whether this is one month early or two years early, you should start saving as soon as possible. Saving early enables you to save larger amounts of money, but it also eliminates the stress from months when you can’t save. For example, if your car breaks down and needs to be repaired or your child needs extra money for a field trip, you won’t have to stress over your vacation planning because you’ll still have plenty of time to save for the trip.

Decide on a budget

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for your trip is to create a budget. Plan how much you’ll spend on hotels, transportation, food and excursions. Consider saving slightly more than you budget for your vacation. This way, if something costs more than you expect, you’ll have the cash to cover the extra expense. Make sure you also consider how much you’ll have to spend on items you usually purchase while you’re at home, such as diapers and formula.

Create a plan

Once you determine your budget for your trip, come up with a plan to save enough money in the amount of time you have. Begin by cutting extra expenditures, such as eating fast food, drinking coffee or going to movies. Remember that while cutting certain things out of your schedule might seem annoying, these small lifestyle changes can quickly lead to big savings. You can also begin to use coupons for groceries or money-saving apps when you shop.

Get your family on board

Remember that saving money is a family affair. Talk with your family about ways you can save money. Maybe you can walk instead of taking a taxi. Perhaps you can ride bikes instead of using money on gas. You could stop eating at restaurants and cook at home. You could cut back on the number of subscription boxes you get as a family. Saving money is easiest when you all agree on how you’ll save money to make your family vacation become a reality.

While planning and saving for your vacation can take time, it will be well worth the effort. Once you’re on your trip, you’ll be able to relax, have fun and make new, interesting memories with your family.
