4 Simple Ways to Improve Your Smile
While professional teeth whitening is the go-to solution for a whiter and brighter smile, it isn’t the only way to improve your smile or your oral health. In some cases, oral surgery is the only option; but for most, your teeth, gums, and even the wrinkles around your mouth can be improved by following these four simple tips.
Consume Plenty of Calcium
We all know that avoiding sugars and eating lots of vegetables is good for our teeth. But did you know that some foods can actually help repair your teeth and strengthen your gums? Calcium is one of the most important vitamins for your oral health, so consuming plenty of dairy products is essential. Keep in mind, however, that your body can’t absorb large amounts of calcium at once, so be sure to spread your calcium consumption throughout the day. You can also get Vitamin D, without which your body can’t absorb calcium at all, from fatty foods like butter, eggs, fish, and liver; fortified foods like cereals, juices, and bread; and from exposure to the sun.
Practice Actually Smiling
Like every other part of your body, your mouth is controlled by muscles that need exercise to keep the skin that protects them toned and wrinkle-free. A simple facial exercise that you can practice every day is the smile – yes, smiling more often can make your smile look nicer. Smile as wide as you can, hold for ten seconds, then relax. You can also hold an exaggerated pucker for ten seconds, and wrinkle your nose as hard as you can. Just don’t exercise your face with a frown!
Use Herbal Remedies
Nothing can replace regular dental care from a qualified dentist, but you can try some herbal remedies for a few of the most common dental complaints. Fresh parsley and mint, for example, can be chewed to freshen breath after a meal – or before a big date. Steep sage and thyme in hot water to make a simple yet effective mouth rinse, and brush your teeth gently with baking soda no more than once a month to help keep them white. For minor toothaches, you can even place a whole clove on the tooth and bite it gently to release the oils, which can temporarily ease discomfort.
Get Your Teeth Cleaned Regularly
Regular teeth cleaning by a dentist is a vital part of your oral health and hygiene regimen. Professional cleanings get rid of the plaque and buildup that brushing and flossing alone can’t take care of, and will give your dentist the chance to spot any dental problems that you may not have noticed yet. If you need more intensive work to get that Hollywood smile that you have always dreamed of, you may consider cosmetic dentistry.
